Your Black World Reports
In the 1970s, the United States had a vested interest in stopping the spread of communism. One thing they weren’t worried about was radical Islam. So, in order to deal with the Russians, the United States began training and providing military aid to Islamic militants in order to help them to fight the Russian military.
The militants were known as the mujahideen. They eventually pushed the Russians out of Afghanistan to later form the Taliban, Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. Osama Bin Laden was a member of that group.
Former British Foreign secretary, Robin Cook said:
“Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan.”
National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski met with Bin Laden in 1979 and took a picture with him. He also told the mujahideen:
“We know of their deep belief in God, and we are confident their struggle will succeed. That land over there is yours, you’ll go back to it one day because your fight will prevail, and you’ll have your homes and your mosques back again. Because your cause is right and God is on your side.”
